Lip-smacking food at Shackfuyu, Soho
Shackfuyu. The name itself sounds exotic, dangerous. But the only real threat you’ll be facing after dining here is to crave your next encounter with that lip-smacking Japanese-fusion food very, very badly.
And how well they set their trap: no reservation, affordable prices, dishes big enough to share and subdued lighting for a private and comfortable setting in which to down cocktails called “Ringo Starr” (Gin, Sake, Apple Juice).
This is not a place where you will be rushed to free your table and in fact, it is deceptively big. They have large red leather circle booths to accommodate groups of friends, which will come in pretty handy because I guarantee you will want to try everything on that menu. The flavours! That meat! The delicate cloud of matcha ice cream, landing light and wonderfully refreshing on your tongue. This is hands down my favourite place to eat in London at the moment and I can’t shut up about it. Go! I’m sure you will love it too. My favourites are:
Smoked Eel Tostada, Pickled Daikon
Prawn Toast masquerading as Okonomiyaki
Aubergine, Miso , Bubu Arare
Beef Picanha, Kimchee Tare Butter
Fried Potatoes in Japanese Curry Sauce
Kinako French Toast with Matcha Ice Cream
Tell me – Do you like fusion food? Where is your favourite place to eat at moment? Have you ever tasted Matcha ice cream? It’s pretty much Heaven on a plate, if you ask me.

July 15, 2015I went here last week for the first time and absolutely LOVED it. The beef in kimchee butter was amaaazing and I adored the prawn toast as well (except for the bonito flakes. ew.)
I also had the Ringo Starr and it was actually my fave cocktail out of all of them! :) xx

July 15, 2015Thank you for commenting Katy and so glad to hear from a fellow fan of Shackfuyu! It really is a pretty amazing place and I love it even more than Bone Daddies. The cocktail list is simple yet delicious and the Ringo Starr was my favourite too! Jesse x

July 15, 2015Hannah you really won't regret it, you absolutely have to go! It's like naughty american food but with elevated flavours from the Orient. It's just so good. Not pictured, the green chilli mac and cheese that I tucked in absent-mindedly before I could snap a picture. Done and dusted between Rob and I under a minute. Thank you for commenting! Jesse x

July 15, 2015Jasiminne! That French toast with matcha ice-cream is alone worth the visit, it tastes divine! It's perfection on your palate and I think about it constantly. I'm off to France for about ten days but I would love a catch-up in August. I've been chatting to Pop Brixton about a meet-up in fact! Thank you for commenting and looking forward to see you again. Ps: LOVED your "Encounters" blog post, laughed out loud while reading it honestly! Jesse x

July 21, 2015Jesse, your pictures of our Shackfuyu feast are literally INCREDIBLE! I need a photography lesson from you, stat! Missing that French toast with matcha soft serve as usual...x
Jesse
July 29, 2015Thank you for the kind words Tamsin! So glad you liked the pictures and it's just practice I promise. Hope you have been well and would love to see you soon for a foodie catchup with the others. Jesse x

August 5, 2015Matcha in desserts can be too sweet, but at Shackfuyu they managed to get it just right! The overly sweet custard-y toast is balanced by the soft serve ice-cream. It's a wonderful dessert!
Pro tip: order 1 to share between 2. I don't know anyone who could finish one by themselves.
Jesse
August 5, 2015I can only say one thing Giulia: AMEN! Also, I wish I could write about food like you do :) It would have taken days of me catching up with proper journalistic food reviews to come up with that turn of phrase with the custard ^^. Thank you for taking the time to comment! Jesse x
