Transform Your Room
Guys! I’m really excited to share today’s post with you. Have you ever been on a film set? Before this late August I hadn’t and it felt a little bit like a dream come true when I was invited to take part in this collaboration, one of the most exciting ones I’ve had the opportunity to do through the blog so far.
So I probably need to start by thanking you for your continued support in this creative journey: without you, what I’m writing about today would never have happened. Thank you so much for reading me in growing numbers, for your kind comments and emails, and for your encouragements – you’re always pushing me forward and giving me a big confidence boost to continue to share my thoughts, interests and photos on this little corner of the internet.
I mean that, thank you. So, do you want to know what happened?
At the end of August, I packed my bags and headed to the Argos studios in Milton Keynes to complete a bedroom makeover on time and on budget. It was a two-days affair with a hotel stay, restaurant visit and the opportunity to peek behind the scenes at the making of a video. It was awesome fun and I felt a little bit swept off my feet.
I was so excited to meet the team behind the brand’s studio, to walk on set in their huge warehouse and to marvel at the lights, the cameras, and the staggering amount of props they keep at hand to make the catalogue look like someone’s real home. This gave me a lot of insight into how much planning, effort and creativity goes on behind the scenes and it was amazing to work with videographers – although I’m not going to lie, I was super intimidated and pretty much flushed the entire time, as you will see for yourselves in the video.
Once I got familiar with my surroundings and the dimensions of the room I was to give a complete makeover to under 60 minutes, I started to unpack the furniture and homewares I had handpicked from this season’s catalogue and I prepared all my props, sketching in my head where in the room I would place what. Then pretty quickly it was cameras rolling, time ticking, heart beating and we were on!
Thoughts on a Makeover
Transforming an empty blank canvas into a light, cosy and stylish bedroom on time and on budget is not an easy task but, if there is one place where you can do this successfully, it has got to be Argos. To me, this is a brand that follows you through the various phases of your life because they have something for every taste and every budget, from staple pieces to statement pieces and plenty of furniture and homewares on trend for each new season.
When I moved to London four years ago I was pretty broke and had to furnish my bedroom under £250. I didn’t think I’d be able to make that space my own and looking good (at all) and this was my first encounter with Argos. One of my flatmates stopped my complaining in its tracks and grabbed me by the hand down Camden High Street to push me into the store. Instantly, I was struck by the variety and affordability of the products I was seeing in the catalogue.
My first London bedroom had it all thanks to Argos: the chest of drawers, fairy lights, a rug, a mirror, good quality linen and cushions, potted plants, and frames for my prints and drawings. All of that without spending an extra penny of my budget! That’s pretty cool, and I’m sure if you live in the UK, you have been there too.
Every time I’ve needed something for our house-share afterwards, I’ve always gone back and checked what I could find on Argos first. Even with moving up the career ladder and indulging a little more on the interiors front, I think it’s a great place to have on your books. Did you know they sell lots of interesting brands like Habitat and Heart of House?
And here is a tip, sometimes they even feature reductions on items you would find at full price on the original brands’ shops at the same time. I also like the reviews customers share, and the easy online one-click reserve and pay at pick-up option, it just makes my life so much easier for little purchases.
My Bedroom Transformation
So, for this bedroom transformation, I wanted to go for something stylish and contemporary in a neutral palette of colours so that it would suit different ages and tastes. The bed, sideboard, and armchair I chose all nod to the midcentury trend and nicely compliment the graphic print of the linen, which I love! It was also important for me that the bedroom felt spacious and airy, this is why I picked the art deco mirror, retro lamp and stag head in a glossy white – the light bounces off all of them and makes the space look brighter. Also, the latter is a playful twist on the classic wall period feature (but more animal-friendly as I’m sure you’ll agree).
I love the idea of bringing nature into the home so I was careful to pick pieces where the wood colours would match and feel natural; I also selected plenty of plants, cacti and succulents. To play with textures I chose the table lamp, knitted pod and cotton throw, giving prominence to textiles and texture in a room always makes it look cosier and lived in. Finally, I chose this bamboo clothes rail as one of the eye’s focus point because I think there’s something wonderful about stepping into a room and instantly picking up on the personality of its owner. This kind of piece allows you to display your favourite clothing and accessories, and set the tone of your space.
I am really impressed at the quick transformation and the stylish affordable furniture and homewares I found on Argos in the context of this challenge. We were given complete creative freedom and I do really love all of these pieces, so much so that I have already picked up some of them for our home! I’ll let you guess which ones. You can find all of my picks below and tell me what you think, but first…

Without further ado, have a look at the highlights from the challenge, and the behind the scenes we snapped on the day for our social media pages with the hashtag #TransformYourRoom on Twitter and Instagram. We had also done a little Periscope broadcast (I know some of you had tuned in, thank you!) and it was a fun warm-up for the official interviews. I hope I’m not too awkward, I was genuinely excited! My Argos Bedroom Picks
Pretty cool no? I would love to know what you think of the makeover and if any of the pieces that I handpicked for this challenge catch your eye. As you will see below, everything costs between £4.99 and £49.00 for homewares and £129.99 and £249.99 for furniture, which I think is pretty impressive considering the look and the quality of these pieces. For a good number of them, I actually feel like they look more expensive than their price, which gives Argos some serious brownie points in my book.
Partners in Crime
I couldn’t finish this blog post without mentioning my partners in crime for this adventure, two fellow interior bloggers that I’ve loved meeting in person and that you should read and follow: Cate from Cate St Hill and Caroline from Patchwork Harmony. They respectively styled the living room and the kids’ bedroom – have a look at Argos’ own recap on their blog too. Seriously, how excited do we look in this picture? Yes, that’s because we had an AWESOME time.
What do you think of this makeover? Would you see any of my picks in your home? Can you believe I found them all on Argos!?
