Beehive Place, Brixton

Beehive Place, Brixton

How was your weekend? For me the stakes were pretty high as it was Rob’s birthday and after a month of April that felt a little bit like a tornado we were really looking forward to a change of pace. I surprised him with tickets to the Agatha Christie’s play The Mousetrap at St Martin’s Theatre on Friday night and we calmed our grumbling stomachs at Bone Daddies’ Shackfuyu that late evening. My official birthday gift to him (perhaps predictably) were two really nice shirts from menswear brand Ben Sherman and he was very pleased.

The highlight of our weekend though, came on Saturday night when we were invited to Beehive Placea British cookery experience and supper club from the team behind roaming restaurant Chateau Marmot and talented chef Samuel Hodges (St John, Soho House). Niched in a spartan-looking but charmingly cosy loft space behind Brixton’s rail arches, Beehive Place has behind it a long streak of of sold-out evenings since its launch in November.

The concept is simple but exciting: each week sees a new sophisticated five-course menu at £35 a head, with every plate a celebration of fresh British ingredients sourced from small and independent producers around the UK. Those are dishes with a story to tell, where surprising and less-known seasonal vegetables and condiments are married artfully on the plate and introduced personally by a team who is truly passionate about their cuisine.

This last month is BYOB so you can bring a bottle of wine for your party, but I need to point out that the bar displays an intriguing selection of shrubs, infusions, bitters, seasonal fruits and herbs so I would definitely recommend going for the delicious and original mocktails on the menu. Priced at £4 each, you can get a few to share and even bring your own spirits to add to the mix if you need a cheerful pick-me-up.

Needless to say, we had a grand time at Beehive Place, I think the pictures speak for themselves.
This was Saturday’s menu and it was flawless, mightily enjoyable food.

Beehive Place Cocktails

Brixton Beehive Club : Earl Grey, Honey Water, Fresh Lemon and Water.
Raspberry Ginger Zinger : Muddled Raspberry and Lime topped with Ginger Beer.

Dinner at Beehive Place
Thanet Cauliflower, Manx scallops, rock samphire, sea aster

Dinner at Beehive Place 2

Legbar blue egg, ‘Portwood Farm’ asparagus, ‘Cobble Lane’ bacon, Norfolkian pea shoots

Beehive Place Dinner 3

‘Peelham Farm’ lamb loin, organic white turnips, Sussex wild garlic

Dinner at Beehive Place 4

Mochdre ‘Hubbard’ chicken, ‘Elveden’ peers, wild chervil, ‘Potash Farm’ walnuts

Dinner at Beehive Place 5

Spelt drop buns, feather cream, ‘Chocolate Tree’ chocolate

Doesn’t it look delicious? It really was. My favourites were probably the two starters because of the originality of the first and incredible flavour of the second (that bacon is going to my pantry stat), and the dessert because you can never go wrong with beignets. And real 70% chocolate. Hmmm, just look at it. But truly I loved every dish served that night and I really think you would too, so I recommend you check them out.

The pop-up is only open for a few more dates in May so don’t miss out and book a ticket now! At time of writing you can still visit on Friday May 1st, Fri. 15th, Sat. 16th, Fri. 22nd,  Sat. 23rd, Fri. 29th and Sat. May 30th. Seats tend to go very quickly (this Saturday is sold out already) so go and grab one now.
